Salt, the white gold, has given our area its name. Salt was mined in Hallstatt around 7,000 years ago. Salt filled the Habsburg coffers and made Gmunden the hub of international politics and trade. The 19th century brought the decline of the salt industry and with it a new phenomenon: the "summer freshness". Emperor Franz Joseph I regularly stayed in Bad Ischl from 1853. For many cities, it was good form to be close to the emperor even in summer. Thinkers, poets, musicians and composers were inspired in the Salzkammergut.
