NATURE IN THE SALZKAMMERGUT

The Tower

The Tower

Observation tower on the Grünberg: fantastic views and photo spot in Gmunden

At the end of the treetop path, you reach the 39-metre-high observation tower. Just like the rest of the trail, the tower is mainly made of wood and built in a nature-friendly way. Its shape pays tribute to the history and culture of the region: it is reminiscent of a giant salt barrel.

During the wheelchair- and pram-friendly ascent via the ramp inside the tower, round after round, a new view of the levels of the forest, the lake Traunsee, the Traunstein and the foothills of the Alps awaits you until you reach the top platform, where a breathtaking 360-degree panorama awaits you. You will have to take many breaks, but by no means out of tiredness: you will probably want to photograph every angle to take the here and now home with you!

Back down you go either via the ramp again or via the tunnel slide – a true buzz of adrenaline.

The Path

The Path

A fully accessible walkway up in the sky

The treetop path winds its way over a total of 1400 metres through the dense mixed mountain forest on the Grünberg. With views of picturesque Gmunden and the crystalline Traunsee between majestic mountains, it reveals the essence of the unique diversity of the Salzkammergut.

If you can, take the time to look around and read the information boards. They tell you interesting things about nature and the animals that surround you. Small branches on the path with climbing elements invite you to balance at dizzying heights – just the right amount of fun and adventure for big and small explorers.

The trail and the observation tower are barrier-free and family-friendly. A maximum gradient of 6% means that even wheelchairs and prams can enjoy a carefree visit.

Learning and activity stations

The learning and activity stations

The learning and activity stations

On the treetop path, between forest, water and dolomite rock, nature shows its most impressive wonders. On the Treetop Walk, you can feel, read and guess what it’s all about at the learning stations. The treetop path is like an outdoor classroom – the class rules: Fascination instead of silence!

The following topics are on the “curriculum”:

  • the tree species of the mixed mountain forest
  • the bird & rock species around Lake Traunsee
  • the history of the horse-drawn railway
  • the surroundings of Gmunden

The adventure stations are sections with climbing and balancing elements that test your sense of balance and courage. The stations provide the right amount of fun for a family outing. This is how nature becomes an experience.

FAQs about the Treetop Walk Salzkammergut

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dogs

Can I take my dog with me on the path?

Can I take my dog with me on the path?

Dogs* and animals of all kinds are not allowed on the trail.

In addition to the hygiene aspect, the safety aspect (for animals and humans) plays a major role in this decision. Most responsible owners keep a close eye on their animals, but dogs can still show unexpected social behaviour towards strangers and also towards their peers. A fear of heights in dogs can also trigger flight behaviour. Unfortunately, the narrow path offers neither retreat nor escape possibilities for animals nor for people with a fear of dogs.

There are doghouses with drinking water available for your four-legged friends at the treetop path, and you can use them free of charge.

Information on this is available at the ticket office.

*Exception: disabled companion dogs and care assistance dogs.
